Before experiencing the wonderous canals of Venice next fall (see Cruising Around the Boot Blog), I had the privilege of supporting the Venetian Carnival: The Ultimate Christmas Party at the Edmonton Expo Centre in December. I attended the event with local entrepreneurs, Newhart Landscaping, Dekel Renovations, Suit Supreme, and Black Box Media. Not only was the gala filled with Christmas cheer and glamourous attire, but it was all for a great cause; proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction went to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
It was a splendid night to wear an elegant dress, fresh manicure and a new hairstyle. With a gourmet dinner, talented entertainment and surprising souvenirs, we indulged, mingled and danced the night away.
While indulging on tasty delicacies, we were entertained by musical and theatrical performances. Our palates were fulfilled, beginning with a roasted red & golden beets salad with winter greens, goat cheese mousse, candied pistachio, with a champagne vinaigrette. The entrée of roast turkey breast served with potatoes with sage dressing, roasted root vegetables, and pan gravy was savoury. We finished off the meal with a festive Venetian dessert platter.
The Uptown Band kept the energy high with popular cover songs including one of my favourite songs “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars. The rhythm even got my husband on the dance floor!
Those who were keen on some activities could take aim with axe throwing, write a letter to Santa, strike a pose in the photobooth, or have their fortune read by a psychic.
The silent auction was very well-received and featured some great items provided by many local businesses.
As a departure gift, we received replica ducat (antique European currency) and a decorated venetian masks. The gala was a success in all its endeavours including fundraising for a great cause, entertaining its guests, and sparking my excitement for my upcoming Italian adventure.
